This program brings together harpist Megan Conley and bassist Shawn Conley for an intimate evening of music inspired by the natural world and the landscapes that shape us. Spanning cultures, centuries, and continents, the program explores how composers have drawn creative inspiration from mountains, oceans, forests, and the rhythms of place.

The three-hour experience includes guided travel up and down the mountain, a live performance, light bites.

Performed in the serene setting of the Ossipoff Cabin, the concert invites listeners to experience music in dialogue with its surroundings. Works by J.S. Bach, François Rabbath, Leilehua Lanzilotti, Takuma Itoh, and others offer diverse perspectives on nature, memory, and belonging—from Europe to Japan to Hawaiʻi and beyond.

Blending the rich sonorities of harp and double bass, this unique program celebrates the connections between music, landscape, and cultural heritage, creating an evening of reflection, beauty, and discovery.

Join Pālehua Conservation Initiative and Oʻahu architect, Graham Hart, for a tour of Ossipoff Cabin. Built high on the ridge of the Waiʻanae mountains in the mid 1950s, this cabin was Vladimir Ossipoff’s personal retreat. Every detail expresses his design philosophy and understanding of this mountain microclimate. Restored with care in 2020 by the Gill ʻohana, the cabin continues to exemplify the indoor-outdoor, carefully crafted, Japanese-inspired style that Ossipoff embraced in future projects. 

The three-hour tour includes an hour of guided travel up and down the mountain, with two hours for learning about and enjoying the Ossipoff Cabin and Goodsill Cottage. A curated selection of pūpū reflecting the themes of the cabin will be provided by co-host Kristine Pontecha.

Graham Hart is an architect and advocate for Hawaiʻi mid-century architecture. He is co-founder of Kokomo Studio, a lecturer at UH Mānoa- School of Architecture, VP of Docomomo HI, serves on the Hawaiʻi Historic Places Review Board, and holds a Doctorate of Architecture with a focus on Tropical Modernism. For the past several years, Graham has helped share the history and design principles of Ossipoffʻs cabin in media, presentations, and architectural tours.

Proceeds from tours benefit Pālehua Conservation Initiative, a new non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to advance education and stewardship efforts that protect, promote, and restore the natural, cultural and community resources of the southern Wai‘anae mountains.

We encourage 14 years and older for ideal participation. Anyone attending must have a ticket. Babies that aren’t yet walking are welcome to join caregivers, but no children under the age of 12 otherwise please!

Limit 15 people per tour.

Guests must be comfortable carpooling to the remote location. 

Refunds/late attendance will not be granted. 

Cancellations permitted within 48 hours of booking.

Andrew Mau + Courtney Monahan are a creative collaboration that brings color, fresh blooms, and joy to Pālehua when they host lei poʻo workshops at the Ossipoff Cabin. Lei poʻo, worn on the head, will be taught as lei wili, where the stems of ferns and flora are bound together by winding rafia to create a flat base for the forehead. All materials will be provided.

The 4-hour workshop includes an hour of guided travel up and down the mountain, and three hours of instruction. Guests can look forward to refreshments and time to explore Vladimir Ossipoffʻs personal retreat.

Ossipoff Cabin was built in the mid 1950s by Vladimir Ossipoff and restored in 2020 by the Gill ʻohana. The cabinʻs Japanese-inspired style, careful use of local materials, and breathtaking view make for an inspiring setting for workshops.

Off-mountain, Andrew is the creative force behind Island-Boy in Kaimuki and Mau-House, while Courtney Monahan is co-founder of Paiko and Pua Hana, which offers fresh and unusual botanicals in arrangements and lei that lean towards the contemporary, with a taste of retro.

When signing up, please be sure to "check out" (even though this is event is free!) by clicking the cart icon at the top of the website after adding your tickets with the "add to cart" button.

After signing up for the kūpuna volunteer series for any of the dates, you may be added to a regular kūpuna volunteer list and will be able to coordinate attendance directly with Aliah.

We welcome retirees, kūpuna, and anyone (of any age!) who wants to dedicate ongoing time on Wednesdays to helping restore the ʻāina at Pālehua! Bring your moʻopuna, bring your uncles and aunties, all are welcome. This will be a weekly event with ʻĀina Programs Manager Aliah Irvine.

Hana will include removing invasive plants, such as removing strawberry guava or bamboo with handsaws or cutting grass. We will also be planting natives.

Please wear shoes, bring a jacket, hat/sunscreen, bug spray, water, and snacks. Gloves will be provided but volunteers are welcome to bring their own, as well as any tools you prefer for this sort of hana.

Participants must be comfortable carpooling from a meeting point in Makakilo to the remote location. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early, as we will head to Pālehua at 9am. Groups must be guided up the mountain together.

We will provide a water jug and a light snack. Please feel welcome to bring your own lunch. When the work is over you are welcome to stay and talk story while eating or you can head out (in carpool group).

Embrace the holiday spirit at Ossipoff Cabin with Pua Hana and Island-Boy for the last floral workshops of the year. Learn how to create a wreath of foraged materials with an emphasis on invasives from Pālehua including Christmas berry, Norfolk pine, and ironwood. This gathering has become an annual tradition much enjoyed by anyone who joins.
